A robot built from car parts

Instead of being painstakingly programmed for each task, the goal is for it to learn tasks from demonstration and data, generalising the way FSD generalises across roads. Progress has been iterative and public: successive generations (Gen 2 and beyond) have shown steadier walking, faster hands and more autonomy, unveiled at Tesla events.
Why it might matter — and the honest caveat
If a capable humanoid can be manufactured at car-like scale and cost, it could take on repetitive or dangerous physical work, and Tesla has talked about deploying Optimus in its own factories first. That is a genuinely large "if." As of 2026 Optimus is an impressive, rapidly-improving demonstrator doing constrained tasks — not a finished product working unsupervised at scale, and rivals like Figure and Unitree are pushing hard on the same goal. The honest read is real, fast progress on an extremely hard problem, not a solved one.
