Fair hit, and worth conceding. Musk's original Mars plan, unveiled in 2016, pointed toward crewed landings in the mid-2020s, and as late as December 2020 he said he was "highly confident" SpaceX would land humans on Mars by 2026. That has not happened: by 2025 Musk had scaled the claim back to roughly a 50-50 chance of sending an uncrewed Starship to Mars by late 2026, with any crewed flight depending on those uncrewed landings succeeding first. The mid-2020s human-landing target slipped by many years. Where the criticism overreaches is in treating the slip as proof the program is dead. Starship is real hardware in active flight testing, and in February 2026 SpaceX reprioritized toward a lunar "self-growing city" first — with an uncrewed lunar landing reportedly targeted for around March 2027 and the start of a Mars city pushed to a "five to seven years" horizon. That reshuffle is itself another de facto slip of the original Mars date, but it reflects a program being redirected, not abandoned — and Mars windows open only about every 26 months, so uncrewed demonstrations genuinely have to come before people. The honest read: the mid-2020s human-Mars deadline was over-promised and badly missed, and the destination order has changed. Verdict: mostly-true — the timeline was wrong by years; the effort itself continues.
