Tesla promised a million robotaxis on the road by 2020 — and delivered none.
Commonly stated as: Musk at Tesla's "Autonomy Day," April 2019
This is simply true. At Tesla's April 2019 "Autonomy Day," Musk said he was "very confident" there would be over a million Tesla robotaxis on the road in 2020 — cars owners could add to a Tesla ride-hailing network to earn money. In 2020 there were zero. No Tesla operated as a driverless taxi that year, and the feature did not exist. The honest update is that a limited version finally began to arrive — years late and far smaller than promised. Tesla launched a supervised robotaxi pilot in Austin in mid-2025 with a human safety monitor in the car, and in January 2026 announced "unsupervised" rides without an in-car monitor. But independent reporting found the service stayed small and heavily supervised: as of early 2026, around 42 vehicles with low availability, and Tesla confirmed the "unsupervised" rides were still shadowed by chase cars carrying safety monitors; truly driverless rides have been rare. By mid-2026 Tesla said the service covered the Austin metro with only about 20 vehicles. That is nothing like the million-strong, nationwide, owner-operated network pitched for 2020. Verdict: true — the specific 2019 promise of a million robotaxis by 2020 was flatly missed; even five-plus years later, only a small, closely supervised pilot exists.
