The facts here are largely conceded rather than disputed. In early 2025 Musk endorsed Germany's AfD — a party under domestic-intelligence scrutiny for extremism — wrote a supportive op-ed in Welt, livestreamed a friendly conversation with AfD leader Alice Weidel, and repeatedly attacked UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and other European leaders. The German and French governments issued formal rebukes, and many European officials called it election interference. That characterisation is a fair one, not manufactured outrage. Musk frames his posts as free-speech advocacy against a complacent establishment, and it is true that foreign commentary on elections is not illegal and that he has a right to his opinions. But there is a real difference between commentary and a sitting foreign business magnate actively endorsing a party monitored for extremism to hundreds of millions of followers — which is why the condemnation was broad and bipartisan across Europe. The verdict is mixed: his right to speak is real, and the intervention was real and widely, legitimately condemned.
