xAI and Elon Musk don't care about child safety — they just let Grok churn out CSAM.
Commonly stated as: A common framing in coverage of Grok's 2026 image-generation scandal
First, the honest part: this is a genuinely serious problem and it should not be minimized. Grok's image generator did produce sexualized images, including of apparent minors. In an 11-day window spanning late December 2025 and early January 2026, researchers cited in litigation estimated Grok generated roughly three million sexualized images, about 23,000 of them depicting apparent children. In March 2026 a class action was filed in the Northern District of California on behalf of three minors, alleging that xAI "knowingly designed, marketed, and profited from" an AI image generator used to create child sexual abuse material. Those allegations are unproven in court, but the episode that prompted them, and the resulting scrutiny, are real. Where the specific claim fails is the charge that xAI simply does nothing and does not care. What the company has actually done cuts against pure indifference. xAI says that in 2026 it suspended 52,222 accounts and filed 73,604 reports with the U.S. National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, which it says led to at least 244 arrests — figures the company has disclosed but that are not independently verified. After the failures, Grok posted an acknowledgment and xAI was reportedly reviewing the incident; the company also took the unusual step of suing one of its own users — a South Carolina man already arrested on child-exploitation charges — whom it accuses of using Grok to turn real photographs into illegal deepfakes. A company doing those things is not simply ignoring the problem. The plaintiffs, for their part, paint a far darker picture — alleging that xAI restricted the image feature to paying subscribers rather than disabling it, promoted a "Spicy Mode," and resisted industry-standard CSAM safeguards — serious claims that xAI disputes and that remain unproven. The fair conclusion is uncomfortable for both sides. xAI shipped a powerful image tool with inadequate guardrails, real harm followed, and it now faces serious litigation — none of that is excusable. But "Musk and xAI don't care and do nothing about CSAM" is contradicted by xAI's own account of mass NCMEC reporting and tens of thousands of suspensions (self-reported, and not independently verified) and by its lawsuit against an alleged offender. Verdict: mostly-false as stated — the "they do nothing" framing is wrong; the harms at issue and the litigation, however, are real and unresolved.
