FSD without the driver
A Robotaxi is a Tesla running Full Self-Driving with the crucial difference that no human is expected to take over. It uses the same approach as the consumer FSD product — a set of cameras giving a 360-degree view, interpreted by neural networks that decide how to steer, accelerate and brake — but operated as a driverless service rather than a driver-assist feature. The bet is that vision and AI, rather than expensive lidar and hand-built high-definition maps, can be made reliable enough to remove the driver entirely.
The Austin launch
Tesla began offering paid Robotaxi rides in Austin, Texas in mid-2025 — initially in a limited, geofenced area and, at first, with a safety monitor in the vehicle before moving toward operations without one. That makes it a genuine driverless commercial service, a milestone Tesla had promised for years and repeatedly missed. It also makes it a small, carefully-bounded pilot rather than the "millions of robotaxis" once forecast — real, but early.
The scaling bet — and the honest status
Tesla's thesis is that because the system runs on cameras and software already present in millions of cars, a working robotaxi could scale far faster and cheaper than sensor-heavy rivals. The counter-case, borne out so far, is that the sensor-rich approach used by Waymo reached reliable driverless operation earlier and is generally rated more mature. The honest status in 2026: Tesla has a real, expanding driverless service in limited areas, but broad, unsupervised, everywhere-robotaxi operation remains a goal being pursued, not a solved problem.
