This one is largely true, and recent events reinforce it. Tesla unveiled the Solar Roof in October 2016 and said volume production would begin in 2018; the rollout was always far slower, limited at first to executives' homes and a small number of customers. In 2019 Musk set a target of producing "1,000 roofs per week" — a goal that proved wildly out of reach. By industry estimates, installations peaked at only about 21 to 32 roofs per week — more than 95% short of that target — and Tesla installed roughly 3,000 Solar Roof systems in the US over about seven years. In August 2026 Tesla quietly discontinued the product, telling installers it would "no longer supply solar roof tiles going forward, only solar panels"; per reporting, Tesla had internally concluded the roof was not financially viable, and its tesla.com/solarroof page now redirects to solar panels. What keeps this from a flat "true" is that the Solar Roof was a genuine, shipping product — thousands of real homes have one — and Tesla's wider energy arm (Powerwall and grid-scale storage) kept growing even as the roof itself failed to scale. But as a specific promise, the Solar Roof was over-sold for years and ultimately pulled. Verdict: mostly-true — the Solar Roof was massively over-promised, never came close to its production targets, and was discontinued in 2026.
